What Is a Life Plan Community? CCRC Contracts and Care Levels Explained

Short answer: A life plan community—also called a continuing care retirement community or CCRC—typically offers independent living plus access to higher levels such as assisted living or nursing care. The defining feature is often a long-term residency and financial contract, not simply the campus layout.

Senior-care terminology can be confusing because the same words are used differently by hospitals, insurance plans, state licensing agencies and providers. The most reliable approach is to translate the label into concrete services and staffing.

What this type of care commonly includes

  • Ask which care levels are on site and whether access is guaranteed or subject to availability.
  • Review the entry fee, monthly fee, refund formula and conditions for future rate increases.
  • Ask how costs change when one spouse needs more care than the other.
  • Understand what happens if the resident’s assets or income decline.
  • Have a qualified professional review a large or complex contract before signing.

Ask what is available on a normal day and on a hard day

Families should ask about nights, weekends, staff call-outs, falls, medication changes, transportation, toileting, transfers, dementia symptoms and hospital returns. Those situations reveal the true limits of a care setting better than a brochure.

Separate services from payment

Whether a service is appropriate and whether Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, insurance or private funds will pay for it are separate questions. Confirm both before relying on a plan.
