Bringing Food From Home to Assisted Living: Safety and Policy Questions

Favorite family foods can make assisted living feel more like home. They can also create safety questions when a resident has food allergies, diabetes, swallowing restrictions, a therapeutic diet or limited refrigerator space.

Ask whether outside food is allowed

Communities may have rules for food brought into apartments, shared with other residents or stored in community refrigerators. Ask before bringing large meals or homemade food for a group.

Check the resident’s current diet instructions

If a clinician or speech-language pathologist has recommended texture-modified food, thickened liquids or another diet, do not assume ordinary home food is appropriate.

Ask the care team how family-provided food can fit the resident’s plan.

Use safe food handling

Older adults can be more vulnerable to foodborne illness. Follow safe cooking, cooling, transport and refrigeration practices. The federal FoodSafety.gov guidance for people at risk explains added food-safety considerations for older adults and other higher-risk groups.

Ask about refrigerator and storage rules

Who monitors expired food? Can residents have a mini refrigerator? How are shared refrigerators labeled? Are there limits on appliances used to reheat food?

Do not share food casually when allergies are possible

A dish that is safe for one resident may be unsafe for another. Ask about the community’s policy before offering food to a roommate, tablemate or group.

Plan for cognitive changes

A resident with dementia may forget how long food has been sitting out or eat something intended for later. Ask how staff help monitor stored food without unnecessarily removing choices.

A family food checklist

  • Outside food permitted?
  • Diet/texture restrictions checked?
  • Allergies considered?
  • Food transported safely?
  • Storage/refrigeration available?
  • Container labeled and dated?
  • Sharing policy understood?
  • Reheating rules known?
