Assisted Living Laundry Services: What Is Included and What Can Cost Extra?
Laundry sounds like a small assisted-living amenity until clothing goes missing, a favorite sweater shrinks or a family discovers that personal laundry costs extra.
Ask how the service works before move-in and label clothing according to the community’s system.
Separate linen service from personal laundry
Some communities include towels and bed linens but charge separately for personal clothing. Others include both within the monthly rate.
Ask specifically about:
- bed linens;
- towels;
- everyday clothing;
- delicates;
- dry cleaning;
- soiled or incontinent clothing.
How often is laundry collected and returned?
Ask whether the resident has a scheduled laundry day, whether staff pick items up, and what happens if clean clothing is needed sooner.
Label clothing before move-in
Ask what label method the provider recommends and whether staff label clothing on admission. Include frequently misplaced items such as sweaters, jackets and sleepwear.
Ask what happens when an item is lost or damaged
Does the community maintain a lost-and-found process? How should a missing item be reported? Is there any reimbursement policy?
Keep photographs or a short inventory of expensive or sentimental items and consider leaving irreplaceable clothing or jewelry with family.
Can family do the laundry instead?
Some residents prefer family-managed laundry. Ask whether that is allowed and how staff know which items should not be sent to the community laundry.
Does laundry change with higher care needs?
Residents with incontinence, wound drainage or other needs may generate more laundry. Ask whether frequency or fees change and how infection-control or handling procedures apply.
