Leaving Assisted Living for Rehab Temporarily: What Happens to the Apartment and Fees?

A resident who leaves assisted living for a hospital or rehabilitation stay may expect to return to the same apartment automatically. Contracts and care requirements do not always make the process that simple.

Ask about the apartment, ongoing charges, belongings and return assessment as soon as a longer absence becomes likely.

Read the admission agreement first

Look for sections covering temporary absence, hospital stays, apartment retention, notice, termination, refunds and care-level charges.

Assisted-living contracts are state- and provider-specific. Do not assume nursing-home “bed hold” rules apply.

Ask which charges continue

The housing portion may continue while the resident is away. Some service or care fees may continue, pause or change depending on the contract.

Ask for the answer in writing and request an itemized explanation if the bill changes.

Protect the resident’s belongings

Confirm whether the apartment remains secured, who can enter, how mail is handled and what happens if the absence becomes permanent.

Do not remove all belongings or surrender keys until the family understands the contractual consequences.

Returning may require reassessment

A rehabilitation stay often follows a significant health change. Before return, the community may need updated medical information and a new assessment of mobility, transfers, medications, cognition or other needs.

Ask which conditions could prevent immediate return or require additional services.

Coordinate the rehab discharge early

Tell the rehab team that the resident lives in assisted living and provide the community’s contact information. Ask what documentation, medication list, therapy recommendations and equipment information the community needs before accepting the resident back.

Questions to ask the business office

  • Does base rent continue?
  • Do care charges continue while absent?
  • Is any fee prorated?
  • What notice applies if the resident cannot return?
  • How are refunds or final charges calculated?

Questions to ask the care team

  • Will a reassessment be required?
  • What records must rehab send?
  • Can the community meet the resident’s new needs?
  • Are temporary added services available?
  • What equipment must be arranged before return?
