Overnight Visits Away From Assisted Living: Planning Medications and Support

An overnight trip away from assisted living can be an important family experience.

It also temporarily transfers many daily-care responsibilities back to family.

Plan the visit as a short care transition, especially when the resident receives medication assistance, transfer help, oxygen/CPAP, or dementia supervision.

Ask for the community’s leave process

Record:

  • sign-out;
  • departure date/time;
  • return date/time;
  • contact number;
  • whether staff need written notice;
  • what happens to meals/services while away.

Medications

Ask the medication staff:

  • how medicines are packaged for leave;
  • who may take custody;
  • exact dosing schedule;
  • controlled-substance process;
  • refrigeration;
  • what to do if a dose is missed;
  • what to do if the trip extends.

Do not repackage or change schedules independently.

Equipment

Bring only what the resident needs and can use safely:

  • walker/wheelchair;
  • CPAP;
  • oxygen if prescribed;
  • incontinence supplies;
  • hearing aids;
  • glasses.

Confirm transport requirements for medical equipment.

Caregiver capacity

Family should understand current:

  • transfer assistance;
  • toileting;
  • bathing;
  • supervision;
  • diet/swallowing needs;
  • nighttime help.

An overnight visit may require more support than family remembers.
