Medicaid Renewal While a Parent Lives in a Nursing Home
A nursing-home resident can remain clinically stable and still lose Medicaid coverage because a renewal packet or requested document was missed.
Treat renewal as a separate recurring task from the nursing-home stay itself.
Know the renewal cycle
Current federal rules generally require periodic renewal at least every 12 months for non-MAGI Medicaid groups such as many aged, blind, and disabled beneficiaries.
States may first try to renew using information they already have.
If they cannot, they may send a renewal form or request additional information.

A move into a facility often changes where mail should go.
Review income and resources
Common changes to report/verify may include:
- Social Security increase;
- pension changes;
- new bank account;
- sale of property;
- inheritance;
- insurance settlement;
- spouse income/resource changes; or
- trust/annuity activity.
Do not assume the nursing home reports every change for you.
Respond on time
Federal 2026 renewal rules require at least 30 days to respond to a renewal form in the covered renewal process.
Use the actual due date on the state notice.
Keep proof of submission.
Use an authorized representative when appropriate
If the resident cannot manage paperwork, a properly designated authorized representative can help with renewal and communication under the state process.
Make sure the state has the authorization on file.

Frequently asked questions
Does Medicaid renew automatically?
Sometimes the state can renew from existing data; other cases require a response.
Can the nursing home handle renewal?
It may help, but the resident/representative should confirm the state received everything.
What if the renewal was missed?
Contact the state immediately. Current federal rules include reconsideration protections for certain terminations caused by failure to submit renewal information when it is later submitted within the applicable period.
The practical goal
Renewal should be treated like a dated benefits project:
notice → documents → submission → confirmation → decision.
