Decorating a Nursing Home Room: What Families Can Bring Safely
Personal photographs, familiar blankets and favorite objects can make a nursing-home room feel less institutional. The safest room also leaves clear space for mobility, staff assistance and emergency access.
Ask for the facility’s room guidelines first
Before bringing furniture or electrical items, ask what the nursing home permits. Fire, electrical, infection-control and roommate policies can limit certain items.
Protect walking and transfer space
Keep pathways clear for walkers, wheelchairs, lifts and staff assistance. A small side table or decorative basket can become a serious obstacle if the resident needs two-person transfer help.
Be cautious with rugs and cords
Loose rugs and extension cords can create trip hazards. Ask staff before adding either. Route approved cords away from walking areas and medical equipment.
Use familiar visual cues
Family photographs, a calendar, familiar artwork or a clearly labeled drawer can support orientation and comfort, especially when vision and cognition are considered.
Keep important items at a height and location the resident can actually reach.
Ask before mounting anything
Facilities may have rules for nails, anchors, adhesive hooks and wall-mounted televisions. Confirm who is responsible for installation.
Think about infection prevention and cleaning
Very cluttered rooms can make cleaning and equipment access harder. Choose a smaller number of meaningful, washable or easily cleaned items.
Protect valuables
Consider leaving irreplaceable jewelry, cash, important papers and other high-value items with family. Ask whether lockable storage is available for smaller personal belongings.
Shared rooms need boundaries
Keep the resident’s belongings within the assigned space and ask before placing furniture or décor in shared areas.
A simple room checklist
- Call bell reachable.
- Path to bathroom clear.
- Mobility equipment has space.
- Approved furniture only.
- No unapproved rugs or cords.
- Personal items labeled when useful.
- Valuables secured.
- Roommate space respected.
