Nursing Home Wi-Fi, Cell Phones and Video Calls: Accessibility Questions

Phones, tablets and video calls can help nursing-home residents maintain relationships and participate in telehealth, religious services or entertainment. Technology only helps when the resident can reliably access and use it.

Check Wi-Fi and cell service in the actual room

Ask whether Wi-Fi is included, whether it reaches resident rooms, and whether there are separate networks or fees. Test the resident’s cell carrier where the resident will live when possible.

Make charging accessible and safe

A resident with limited mobility may not be able to reach an outlet behind furniture. Ask staff where a phone or tablet can charge without creating a cord trip hazard.

Ask what assistance staff can provide

Can staff help initiate a video call, adjust volume or connect the resident to a scheduled telehealth visit? Staff support can vary by shift and workload, so clarify expectations.

Adapt technology to hearing, vision and dexterity

Consider large text, voice control, amplified sound, captions, simplified home screens, styluses, stands or other accessibility features. Ask the resident’s hearing or vision specialist for individualized recommendations when needed.

Protect privacy

A resident may have a roommate and staff entering the room. Ask where private calls can occur and what facility policies apply to cameras or recording.

Do not record roommates, staff or other residents without understanding consent and applicable law.

Telehealth requires a care handoff

If a clinician changes medication or gives new instructions during a video visit, ask how that information reaches the nursing team and medical record. A successful video connection is not the same as completing the care handoff.

Questions to ask

  • Is Wi-Fi available and included?
  • Does it reach the resident’s room?
  • How is cell coverage?
  • Can staff help with video calls?
  • Is a private space available?
  • How are devices charged safely?
  • What is the recording/camera policy?
  • How are telehealth orders communicated?
