What to Ask About Air Conditioning and Indoor Temperature in Assisted Living
Indoor temperature can be a comfort issue—and during extreme heat or cold, a health issue.
Older adults can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness, and some medications or health conditions can affect temperature regulation.
Ask how the community monitors building conditions and what happens when an apartment’s heating or cooling fails.
Ask who controls apartment temperature
Questions:
- Individual thermostat?
- Central system?
- Locked temperature range?
- Resident control?
- Staff adjustment needed?
- Seasonal switch-over delays?
Ask about monitoring
Does the community monitor:
- apartment temperatures;
- common areas;
- HVAC alarms;
- outdoor extreme-temperature alerts?
Ask who receives the alert after hours.
Ask about failure response
If AC fails during a heat wave:
- maintenance response time?
- portable cooling?
- cooler common space?
- temporary apartment?
- family notification?
- emergency relocation?
Ask similar questions for winter heating failure.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one federal assisted-living temperature rule?
No single national assisted-living operating standard applies everywhere. State/local rules and facility policies matter.
What if the resident feels cold at a “safe” temperature?
Comfort needs should still be discussed; clothing, bedding, room location, and clinician input may matter.
When is heat an emergency?
If the resident develops concerning symptoms such as confusion or other signs of heat illness, seek clinical/emergency help.
The practical goal
Do not ask only whether the building has air conditioning.
Ask who monitors it, who fixes it, and where the resident goes if the system cannot keep the apartment safe.
