Housekeeping staff tidying a bedroom.

What Does Housekeeping Include in an Assisted-Living Apartment?

Assisted-living brochures often say “housekeeping included.”

That phrase does not tell you how often staff clean, whether laundry is included, or who handles an urgent spill.

Ask for the actual housekeeping schedule and exclusions.

Routine cleaning

Ask whether service includes:

  • vacuuming/sweeping;
  • bathroom cleaning;
  • dusting;
  • trash;
  • changing bed linens;
  • kitchen/kitchenette surfaces;
  • mopping;
  • bed making.

Frequency

Record:

Housekeeping: ______ times/week

Linen change: ______

Laundry: ______

Trash: ______

Deep cleaning: ______

Personal laundry

Ask:

  • included or extra?
  • resident labels required?
  • turnaround time?
  • delicate items excluded?
  • dry cleaning?
  • lost clothing process?

Unscheduled cleaning

If the resident spills a drink, has an incontinence accident, or becomes ill, ask who handles cleanup and whether it creates an extra charge.

The practical goal

Turn “housekeeping included” into a task list + frequency + exclusions + extra-fee policy.
