How to Ask About Meal Delivery to an Assisted-Living Apartment
An assisted-living community may deliver meals to a resident’s apartment, but the policy can differ for temporary illness, permanent mobility limitations, resident preference, or premium room service.
Ask when delivery is available and what happens if the resident stops going to the dining room unexpectedly.
Clarify the policy
Ask:
- Is delivery routine or exception-only?
- Temporary illness only?
- Doctor’s order required?
- Extra charge?
- How many meals?
- What delivery times?
- Is tray pickup included?
Ask what assistance accompanies delivery
Does staff:
- open containers;
- set up the tray;
- cut food;
- provide cueing;
- assist feeding;
- monitor intake?
Meal delivery and meal assistance are different services.
Watch for isolation or decline
A resident who suddenly stops dining with others may be:
- ill;
- weak;
- depressed;
- confused;
- having swallowing/dental problems;
- avoiding social contact.
Ask how the community follows up.

Frequently asked questions
Can meals be delivered every day?
Community policies vary.
Does meal delivery include feeding?
Not necessarily.
Should family request room meals to avoid falls?
Discuss the underlying mobility/safety issue with the care team rather than using room delivery as the only solution.
The practical goal
Know whether apartment meals are temporary, ongoing, included, or extra—and whether anyone is checking that the resident actually eats.
