Assisted Living for Someone Who Needs Help Getting Out of Bed
A resident who needs help getting out of bed may still fit assisted living—but the exact transfer matters.
Ask what the resident needs at 7 a.m., 2 a.m., and after a bad day, not just how they transferred during the assessment.
Define the transfer
Ask therapy/clinicians whether the resident needs:
- verbal cueing;
- standby help;
- one-person hands-on assistance;
- two-person assistance;
- mechanical lift;
- bed rail/device;
- adjustable bed;
- another method.
Do not ask family or facility staff to improvise technique.
Ask the community what it can provide
Questions:
- Which transfer levels are permitted?
- Is two-person help available?
- Are mechanical lifts allowed?
- Does staff receive lift training?
- Can staff respond unscheduled overnight?
- Does apartment size allow equipment?
Bed height and room layout matter
A low mattress, tight wall space, or soft chair can make transfers harder than during the assessment.
Ask to review the proposed apartment.
What if the resident declines temporarily?
After illness, a resident may need more help for several days.
Ask whether the community can temporarily increase support or whether another setting would be required.

Frequently asked questions
Does needing help out of bed mean nursing-home care?
Not automatically.
Can family provide the second person?
Possibly, but that may not create a reliable 24/7 staffing plan.
Will care fees increase?
They may. Ask how transfer assistance is priced.
The practical goal
The community should be able to state clearly:
who helps, how much help, what equipment, and what happens when the resident needs more assistance than usual.
