Selecting A Facility

Upon making the decision of which nursing home to place your parent, spouse or friend in, please refer to some key questions listed below. It is highly recommended to tour the facilities to see first hand what the environment is like.

Is the facility clean-(are bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms clean)
Are the beds made?
Does the facility smell nice?
Are the residents out of bed in the morning?
Are the residents nicely groomed? (nails clipped, hair brushed, clean shaven)
Are there many activities? (Ask to see a Calendar)
Is there an area outside where the residents can get fresh air?
How many nurses and nurses aides on a unit? (ratio of aides to patients)
How long is call bell response time?
Are there weekend programs? (what are they)
How many days a week is there therapy? (Physical, Occupational and Speech)
How many times a day is therapy given?
How is the food? (Ask to see a menu)
Does the facility provide a TV or phone? (If not, how much a month)
Where are the meals served?
How often are Dr's in house and available?
